The Leonids are bright meteors and can also be colorful. They are also fast: Leonids travel at speeds of 71 km (44 miles) per second, and are considered to be some of the fastest meteors out there. Leonids are also known for their fireballs and earth grazer meteors. Fireballs are larger explosions of light and color that can persist longer than an average meteor streak. The Leonids are best viewed starting after midnight. Leonid meteor showers are bombardments of shooting stars that appear everyday on about November 17th. Meteor showers are produced when Earth passes close to a debris path and tiny particles of dust burn into the Earth's atmosphere. The meteors come into the atmosphere at about 158,000 mph, often leaving glowing or colorful trails for seconds or minutes after they evaporate.
